Wallace Island - Mar 19-21, 2010
Wallace Island is almost entirely a marine park. It is long and narrow with trails throughout the island which has the form of a long "H". The dock at Conover Cove is near the waist of the island and provides access to the trails as well as the clearing that was once the centre of activity when the island was private property. Several buildings remain from this era. I cruised there from Whaler Bay on Galiano Island, where the Port Nut had been left docked from the week. It had been too windy to safely make the crossing of Georgia Strait. Whaler Bay was a serendipitous discovery because the ferry terminal is only a 15 minute walk away. Mike, the wharfinger, reported that the boat had fared well and that several people had come by to admire it. The bold red colour sure attracts attention.
After spending a couple of nights docked at Conover Cove and exploring Wallace Island, I made my way south and stopped again at what has, by now, become my favourite spot: Montague Harbour. A short hike in the park rewarded me with many signs of spring before I made my way back to Whaler Bay with a song in my heart as happy as that of the birds singing in the trees. A chat with Mike and night at Whaler Bay and I was ready for an early morning departure.
Next morning was bright and calm. I made a very pleasant run back to the mainland having garnered a bit more experience and discovered another gem of a marine park: Wallace Island.
